OAKLEY

History

Oakley, known for “meadow of oak trees” was established with its first post office in 1898. It was incorporated as a city in 1999. The area has had vineyards since the late 1800s with nearly 80% as Zinfandel.  

The 1900s saw automotive and farm equipment dealerships, a hotel, grocery/cash stores,  five bars, four schools, gas stations, movie theaters, ice cream shops + restaurants. The Oakley Women’s Club in 1913 established one of the first free libraries in Contra Costa County.
