Everything worth knowing before you buy
Fit, fabric weight and care all change how a flannel wears. Here's the short version from the folks who stock the racks.
Quick care
- Wash cold, inside out
- Tumble dry low or hang dry
- Skip the bleach
- Wool follows its care label
What's the difference between flannel and plaid?
Flannel is the fabric. It's a woven cotton or wool that gets brushed so it feels soft and holds warmth. Plaid is the pattern. Most flannels are plaid, but not every plaid shirt is flannel.
What weight should I get?
Lightweight works for mild days and layering. Midweight is the everyday pick for most of the year in California and Nevada. Go heavyweight when you want the shirt to do the job of a light jacket.
How should a work flannel fit?
You want room through the shoulders and chest so you can reach overhead without the shirt pulling, and sleeves that land at the wrist. If you wear it over a hoodie or thermal, size up or pick a relaxed or loose fit. Carhartt's Loose Fit is their roomiest cut.
What's a shirt jac?
A shirt jac is cut like a button-up but built heavier, and some are lined with quilting or fleece. Wear it open over a tee or thermal as your outer layer.
Will my flannel shrink?
Cotton flannel can shrink a little over the first few washes, mostly from hot water and high heat. Wash cold and tumble dry low or hang dry. For wool, like the Pendleton Board Shirt, follow the care label since many need dry cleaning or a gentle hand wash.
Can I try these on in store?
Yes. Most of the flannels here are on the racks at our eight shops across California and Nevada. Stock changes by location, so give your shop a call before heading over.
