This is a pencil.
Design Timeline: early mid-1500s
Materials: graphite / clay / wood / aluminum / styrene-butadiene
Due to their indifference to gravity and harsh conditions, pencils are the tool of astronauts and can be sharpened up to 17 times, write 45,000 words and draw a 45-mile line, uninterrupted.
The pencil was the preferred creative instrument of terrestrial novelists Hemingway, Nabokov, Steinbeck, and Capote and transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau can fairly be credited with perfecting the early American pencil while working in the family pencil factory before escaping to write Walden.
This is a fatwood kindling stick.
Design Timeline: early Cretaceous (140 MYA)
Materials: aged pine heartwood
Almost magical for its natural fire-starting properties, fatwood is the resin-saturated and aged heartwood of sap-producing conifers, generally found in dry stumps. The natural aging and evaporation process hardens the sap containing the volatile and flammable hydrocarbon terpene (a major natural component of the highly flammable turpentine) into a dry, extremely hot-burning kindling that is wind-resistant and burn-ready–even when wet.
To use your fatwood kindling stick, shave small curls with a blade to light larger pieces of tinder. If you intend to cook on your fire, wait until the fatwood has burned out as the pitch-soaked wood produces an oily, sooty smoke.
