Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) is the largest publicly-listed power company in Southeast Asia. The Single Buyer Department (SB) is the entity authorized to manage all electricity procurement and related services for the company. Their main task is to purchase electricity from power producers to meet demand at a low cost, and they also play an important role in ensuring the security of supply to the electricity industry. SB engaged Purpose/Built to design and deploy a bespoke web application to modernize their operations and more effectively leverage data.
To achieve their goals, SB needed to populate historical data via a live tool. They requested a system that would allow them to import legacy excel reports into an automated model that can extrapolate data and create algorithms for planning and forecasting. This data would also be used by their technical advisory unit to provide independent advice on technical and industry related matters to other agencies.
To allow SB to collaborate more effectively with internal partners, we created a data processing system that enabled the uploading of data from previous legacy systems, which were then turned into interactive graphs. Working in close partnership with SB through an embedded project team, we were able to build an effective custom tool meeting the needs of their multi-disciplinary team under tight project timelines. We were subsequently engaged to lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT), Quality Assurance (QA) and the design and delivery of a robust and interactive system.
Through the new system, TNB is now able to analyze its power usage and provide an accurate estimation from previous historical data. The system allows them to digitize results from excel sheets to be shared across numerous departments for analysis. The first deployment helped reduce data sharing time from seven working days to just one.
